First Grade 2009-2010

The classes of Mrs. Yelin and Mrs. Luke celebrated Martin Luther King Jr.  and paid tribute and honor to this great leader.  The children put on a performance which included a small skit about the Montgommery Bus Boycott.  The children sang songs and chants, and recited poems too. Parents were all invited to come watch.

Veteran’s Day

For Veteran’s Day this year, Lieutenant Colonel Jose Bati, father of Jomari Bati – our intern from Dominican College – visited the classes of Pat Ochman and Kerri Goldstein.  Colonel Bati served in the Army for 30 years and is currently in the Reserves, serving in Washington, D.C.  He explained to the children that our Armed Forces protect our freedoms and allow us to go to school and worship in our own way.  After a question and answer period, Colonel Bati surprised the children with Army pencils and stickers.  The children sang for Colonel Bati and gave him thank you letters and a banner from the class.  Thank you Colonel Bati for your service to our country!

First Grade Art Show

Mrs. Piteo and the PTA helped to organize an Art Fair.  Students have been working with Mrs. Piteo on various "masterpieces" that they chose to frame and display.  Some of the art included Self-Portraits, Landscapes, Haunted "crayon-resist" scenes, and colorful abstract shape drawings.  The students walked through our "gallery" with their families and were proud to show-off their work.  It was great to see all of our "artists" hard work.

First Grade Authors Tap Their Writing Skills

As first grade classes in William O. Schaefer launched their Writers Workshop Unit, the entire grade went to work on their first personal creative writing attempts.  In a salute to their success, a grade-wide author’s celebration was held.  During the celebration the authors split up into different classrooms and shared their stories with classmates from other classes and with students in kindergarten classes.  Everyone listened as classmates read their stories out loud to their friends and kindergarten teachers.  It was such a great way to celebrate the students’ writing.

The first graders were excited when they arrived to school and saw the pink school bus belonging to Junie B. Jones.  The author of the series, Barbara Park, is one of today’s funniest, most popular authors.  Her Junie B. Jones series which began with JUNIE B. JONES AND THE STUPID SMELLY BUS is loved by young readers of all ages.  The students were laughing throughout the performance.  We want to thank the PTA for helping to organize this for our first graders.

Patriot Day

Friday, September 11th, we had our first grade assembly to talk to the children about the importance of Patriot Day.  We talked about what the word "patriot" means and the significance of this day.  We said the Pledge of Allegiance together as a school community and listened to a patriotic song.  The children also sang "This Land is Your Land."

Thank you to Coach Hudson, Coach Steingasser, and Beth Fox for their help with this assembly.
