Children at WOS attend physical education every other day.  Our goal is to help kids achieve growth and development via a wide range of movement experiences.  We focus on moving toward fitness and the concept of wellness in a safe, high-energy, fun way.  Schaefer is fortunate to have great equipment, a gymnasium, fields, playgrounds and blacktop areas for instruction as well as a nature trail for hiking.

Here is a sampling of some of the activities and units throughout the year:

  • playground safety
  • ball skills
  • target games
  • parachute activities
  • jump rope
  • tumbling
  • rock wall climbing
  • dance
  • gym city
  • fitness test
  • side walk games
  • relays

In addition, some big events are scheduled including the 1 mile community health walk, dance festival and field day.

Coach Hudson and Coach Steingasser are very proud of their program and the kindergartners and first graders for their hard work, smiles, fun and learning.

Remember – "never smoke" and "I Love P.E.!"

"What is art?"

The students in Art Enrichment have been discovering "unique" ways that people can create art.  We viewed some unique creations from the internet such as: giant ice/snow sculptures, food art, water art (photography), optical illusion art (chalk drawings), pastery arts, floral sculptures, junk sculptures, collages created by recycled materials, etc…  A few weeks ago students worked on a team project to create a junk sculpture of their own.  Now, we are currently creating mosaics with BEANS!

Mrs. Piteo is looking for local artists to come and visit the art enrichment classes!  We would like to here about how and why local artists create their work.  Students have prepared some interview questions just incase we meet a real artist.  If you know someone who would be interested  in sharing their unique art with us, please contact Mrs. Piteo at epiteo@socsd.org.  This would be a wonderful learning experience for the students.

Students are playing steady beats on the new finger drums.

We are using the theme song from "The Addams Family" to play a steady beat and listen to the appropriate times to play.  Practicing playing a steady beat helps us listen, feel the beat and rhythm of the music.

We will continue practicing playing a steady beat either tapping on our legs or on instruments.

The WOS first graders are getting ready for our Kids Art Fair this October 28th.  Students have created one "masterpiece" to display at the art show.  Students were given the option to create something they have learned about in the art room.  You can expect to see a variety of different styles of art such as Self Portraits, Landscapes, Mosaics, Haunted "crayon-resist" scenes, Splatter paintings (Jackson Pollack style), Salt Paintings, Q-tip paintings, and colorful abstract shape drawings.

The students understand that their work will be framed for display and the frames are being "borrowed" from the Kids Art Fair Company.  We discussed what the purpose of having a frame is and why some artists choose to frame their work.  At this event students will see what a wonderful experience it is to share one anothers work in a gallery-style atmosphere.  Hope to see you at the show!
